About GIF
CompuServe released GIF in 1987, and the 1989 version added animation and transparency. Decades later, it's still how short loops and reactions travel across chats and the web.
A GIF holds at most 256 colors per frame. That suits logos and simple graphics but makes photos look grainy. Its transparency is on or off for each pixel, with no soft edges.
Filepeek plays a GIF the way browsers do, with a timeline of its frames under it. Pause it, step through it frame by frame or change the speed. The details list the number of frames and how long one loop lasts.

Questions
Does Filepeek play animated GIFs?
Yes, the way browsers do, with a timeline of its frames. Pause it, drag along the timeline, or step back and forth one frame at a time. On a keyboard, Space plays and pauses, and comma and period step a frame.
Why do GIFs look grainy?
Each frame can only use 256 colors, so photos lose their smooth shades. Logos and flat graphics look fine.
Is my GIF uploaded?
No. It opens inside your browser and stays on your device.
Can I save a frame as PNG?
Yes. Pause on the frame you want, then Export and Save frame as PNG saves it at full size.
