Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains what information Filepeek collects, how we use it and the choices you have. The files you open stay on your device.
- Your files are never uploaded
- We never see a file's name or contents
- No accounts, cookies, ads or trackers
- Usage is counted without identifying you
1. Who we are
Filepeek is operated by Fileport Inc., a Delaware corporation ("Fileport", "we", "us" or "our"), which is the controller of the information described in this Privacy Policy.
2. Your files
Filepeek opens files inside your web browser, on your own device. Your files, their names and their contents are not uploaded to us or to anyone else, and we cannot see them. Files you save or export, such as a photo saved as JPEG, are also created on your device.
A file leaves your device only if you choose Send, which hands it to Fileport's file sharing service at fileport.io in a new tab. From that point, Fileport's Privacy Policy applies.
3. Files opened from links
A filepeek.io/# link carries a file's address after the "#", which browsers do not send to servers, so we never receive it. Your browser downloads the file directly from the website that hosts it, which receives the request as it would any other visit. We record only that a link brought a file and whether it arrived.
4. Information we collect
When you open a file, your browser sends us:
- The file's extension, such as .heic, and its size
- Whether it opened and, if not, the reason, such as a damaged file
- Whether a Filepeek link brought it
With it, we record your browser (such as Chrome), whether you use a phone or a computer, and your country as indicated by your IP address.
If an error occurs in Filepeek's own code, your browser sends us a report of the error and the extension of the file on show. File names, web addresses and quoted text are removed from the report before it is sent. With it, we record your browser and whether you use a phone or a computer.
To count how many people use Filepeek and how many encounter each error, we hash your IP address. We store only the hash, never the IP address itself.
5. Information we do not collect
We do not collect:
- Your files, their names or their contents
- The address of a file opened from a link
- Your name, email address or account details, as Filepeek has no accounts
- Information for advertising, or about your activity on other websites
6. How we use information
We use this information only to operate, maintain and improve Filepeek: to learn which file types people open, which ones fail and which errors to fix first, and to protect the Service from abuse. Where the GDPR or similar laws apply, our legal basis is our legitimate interest in running and improving Filepeek. We do not sell or rent your information, use it for advertising or attempt to identify you.
7. Retention
We keep usage counts and error reports for as long as Filepeek is in operation, so that we can compare them over time. The hashes are made with a secret key, so they cannot be turned back into IP addresses without it.
8. Cookies and local storage
Filepeek does not set cookies and does not use third-party analytics, advertising or tracking tools. A few preferences, such as "Don't ask again", are stored in your browser and are never sent to us.
9. Service providers
Filepeek is hosted by Cloudflare, Inc. As with any web host, Cloudflare processes the requests your browser makes, including your IP address, to deliver and protect the Service, as described in Cloudflare's Privacy Policy. Cloudflare operates data centers worldwide, so information may be processed outside your country.
When you choose Check now on an app's page, Filepeek asks the authority that issued the app's certificate whether the certificate is still valid. The request passes through our server, which keeps nothing, and contains only what identifies the certificate, never the file.
10. Security
Nothing inside a file runs on Filepeek: scripts and macros in files never execute, and links in files open only when you choose to follow them. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect the information we keep.
11. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information about you, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. Because we do not know who you are, we usually cannot link any record to you, but you may contact us and we will respond as the law requires.
12. Children
Filepeek is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
13. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated version takes effect when posted here, with a new date at the top.
