About AU
Sun Microsystems made the AU format for its Unix workstations, and NeXT used the same format as .snd. In the 1990s it was common on early web pages, since Java applets could only play AU files.
An AU has a short header and then the sound, usually 8-bit μ-law at 8 kHz in mono, the quality of a phone call. Others hold PCM or A-law.
No browser plays AU by itself. Filepeek decodes it with FFmpeg inside your browser, and Export saves a WAV or MP3 that any app opens.

Questions
How do I open an AU file?
Drop it on this page or press Peek an AU. It plays right in your browser, with nothing to install.
Is an .snd file the same?
Mostly. NeXT computers saved the same format as .snd, and Filepeek plays both. A few old apps used .snd for other formats, which may not play.
Can I convert AU to WAV?
Yes. Choose Export, then Save as WAV, which any app opens, or Save as MP3. Drag the handles on the waveform strip to keep only a part.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The sound plays inside your browser and never leaves your device.
