About DV
DV arrived in 1995 from camcorder makers led by Sony and Panasonic, and MiniDV tapes held home videos for over a decade. Captured over FireWire, a tape became a .dv file on the computer.
DV stores every frame on its own at 25 Mbit/s, in 720 × 480 or 720 × 576, with PCM sound. An hour takes about 13 GB, a lot for such a small picture.
Chrome, Edge and Firefox can't play DV. Filepeek decodes it with FFmpeg inside your browser, and Export saves an MP4 a fraction of the size, ready to share.

Questions
How do I watch my MiniDV captures?
Drop the .dv files on this page or press Peek a DV. They play in your browser, with nothing to install.
Why are DV files so big?
DV stores every frame on its own at 25 Mbit/s, about 13 GB an hour. Saved as MP4 here, the same video takes a fraction of the space.
Does it play DV inside AVI or MOV?
Yes. Many capture apps wrap DV in AVI or MOV files, and Filepeek plays those too.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video plays inside your browser, so family tapes stay on your device.
