About MPG

MPEG-1 became a standard in 1993 and put movies on Video CDs. MPEG-2 followed for DVDs and digital TV, and .mpg files of both came from cameras, capture cards and DVD recorders for years.

An MPG holds MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video along with MPEG audio, Dolby Digital or PCM sound. Files named .m1v, .m2v or .mpv hold the video alone.

Chrome, Edge and Firefox can't play MPG. Filepeek decodes it with FFmpeg inside your browser, and Export saves an MP4 that's often much smaller.

Questions

Is MPG the same as MPEG?

Yes. Files named .mpg and .mpeg are the same format, MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video with its sound, and Filepeek plays both.

Why is my MPG so big?

MPEG-2 needs about twice the bitrate of H.264 for the same picture, and MPEG-1 more. Export saves an H.264 MP4, which can be much smaller.

Can I save just a part?

Yes. In the export sheet, drag the handles on the frame strip to where the part starts and ends, and only that part is saved.

Is my video uploaded?

No. FFmpeg decodes it inside your browser, so your videos stay on your device.
