About MP4

MP4 became a standard in 2001, built on Apple's QuickTime format. Phones, cameras, editing apps and websites all save video as MP4, and nearly every device plays it.

An MP4 is a container. Most hold H.264 video with AAC sound, and newer ones HEVC or AV1, often in HDR. One file can also carry several sound tracks, subtitles and chapters.

Every browser plays MP4 when it can decode the video inside. Filepeek adds the details, frame steps and Export, which saves a smaller MP4 to send, and plays the older MPEG-4 video of early phones and cameras, which Chrome, Edge and Firefox can't.

Questions

How do I make an MP4 smaller?

Open it, choose Export, then Save as MP4. Pick Small or Balanced, or a size limit of 10, 25, 50 or 100 MB to get the sharpest picture that stays under it.

Can I save just a part of it?

Yes. In the export sheet, drag the handles on the frame strip to where the part starts and ends. Only that part is saved.

Can I step through it frame by frame?

Yes. Pause it, drag along the timeline, or step back and forth one frame at a time. On a keyboard, Space plays and pauses, and comma and period step a frame.

What is an LRV file?

A small copy of the video that GoPro and DJI cameras record beside each MP4 for quick previews. It's an MP4, and it plays here the same way.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video plays inside your browser, and Export works there too. Nothing is sent to a server.
