About M4V

Apple made M4V for the videos of the iTunes Store, and iMovie and HandBrake can save it too. It's an MP4 with a few Apple extras, such as chapters, a Dolby Digital track for Apple TV and, on store purchases, FairPlay copy protection.

Without the protection, an M4V is a regular MP4 under another name, mostly H.264 video with AAC sound. That's why renaming one to .mp4 usually just works.

Every browser plays an unprotected M4V by itself. Filepeek adds the details, frame by frame steps and Export, which saves an MP4 for apps that don't know the extension. Movies and shows bought from Apple stay locked to Apple's apps.

Questions

Is M4V the same as MP4?

Nearly. An M4V is an MP4 that may carry Apple's FairPlay protection and a few extras. Unprotected ones play like any MP4, and Export saves them as .mp4.

Why won't a movie from iTunes play?

Movies and shows bought from Apple are protected with FairPlay, so they only play in Apple's apps on authorized devices. Filepeek can't unlock them.

Can I turn it into an MP4?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as MP4. Pick Best to keep the most quality, or a size limit to make it smaller.

Is my video uploaded?

No. It plays inside your browser and stays on your device.
