About EXR

Industrial Light & Magic made OpenEXR for its film effects and shared it in 2003. Blender, Houdini, Nuke and every renderer save frames as EXR, and HDR photographers merge brackets into it.

An EXR keeps light as half or full floats, far brighter than a screen's white, with ZIP, PIZ, PXR24, B44 or DWA compression, so nothing in the highlights or shadows is clipped.

Filepeek reads it in your browser and tone maps it for your screen. Exposure brightens or darkens the light by up to 6 stops to see into the highlights or the shadows, and Export saves the picture as shown, as PNG or JPEG.

Questions

How do I open an EXR file?

Drop it on this page or press Peek an EXR. It opens tone mapped for your screen, with nothing to install.

Can I see what's in the highlights?

Yes. Open Exposure and drag it below 0 to darken the light by stops, or above 0 to brighten the shadows. Reset puts it back.

Can I convert EXR to PNG?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as PNG. It saves the picture at the exposure on show.

Is my image uploaded?
