About DDS

Microsoft made DDS, DirectDraw Surface, for DirectX 7 in 1999, and games have kept their textures in it since, as do their mods and 3D apps: Skyrim and Fallout, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Assetto Corsa and many more.

A DDS keeps pixels the way a graphics card reads them, mostly in blocks compressed with BC1 to BC7, of which DXT1 to DXT5 are the first, beside plain 8, 16 and 32 bit layouts and half and full floats. One file can hold a texture's mipmaps, the six faces of a cube map, or the slices of an array or a volume.

No browser opens a DDS, so Filepeek decodes it itself. Each mipmap, face and slice is a page, and the bar names the format, like BC7 sRGB. BC5 normal maps get their blue channel back, HDR textures are tone mapped for the screen, and Export saves the page on show as PNG or JPEG.
