About ICNS

Apple made ICNS for Mac OS 8.5 in 1998, and every Mac app still keeps its icon in one, in its bundle under Contents/Resources. Folders, disks and documents get theirs the same way.

An ICNS holds one icon drawn at several sizes, from 16 × 16 up to 1024 × 1024, with Retina copies at twice the pixels. Newer icons keep PNG or JPEG 2000 pictures inside, older ones packed pixels with a mask for their transparency.

No browser shows ICNS. Filepeek reads every picture in it, the biggest first, each a page named by its size, and Export saves the page on show as PNG with its transparency.
