About IPYNB

IPython's notebook came out in 2011 and became Project Jupyter in 2014, named for Julia, Python and R. A notebook is a list of cells: Markdown for the words and math, code for a kernel to run, and below each code cell what it printed, drew or returned.

An .ipynb file is JSON, with every output saved inside it: charts as PNG or SVG, tables as HTML, errors with their colors. That makes a notebook a report anyone can read, as long as they have Jupyter or an app that draws it.

Filepeek draws the notebook as Jupyter does, with nothing in it running: Markdown and math, code in color with each cell's count, tables, errors and charts as they were saved, each picture opening in the image viewer. Export saves it as a script, without outputs or as HTML, and Tree shows the JSON.

Questions

How do I open an IPYNB file without Jupyter?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek an IPYNB. It opens as Jupyter shows it, with its outputs as they were saved.

Does the code run?

No. Nothing in the notebook runs, so it shows what the code printed and drew when it was last run. An interactive chart shows its saved picture, or its data in the tree.

Can I turn a notebook into a Python script?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as Python script. The code cells come in order, with the Markdown as comments.

How do I strip a notebook's outputs?

Choose Export, then Save without outputs. Every output and count is cleared and the rest of the file stays as it was.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
