About NBT

Minecraft saves its data as NBT, Named Binary Tag: a world's level.dat, its players, the structures that structure blocks save, and the chunks of its region files. Markus Persson made it for the game's first versions.

NBT is a tree of named tags, each a byte, short, int, long, float, double, string, list, compound or array of bytes, ints or longs. Java Edition writes it big-endian, usually packed with gzip, and Bedrock little-endian, its level.dat behind an 8 byte header.

Filepeek reads every form into a tree with each value's type. A level.dat gets an Overview with the world's name, version, seed, game mode, difficulty, hardcore, last played and spawn, and a structure file its size and its palette of blocks.
