About OVPN

VPN services, OpenVPN Access Server, pfSense, OPNsense and many home routers export .ovpn profiles for OpenVPN Connect, Tunnelblick and the other OpenVPN apps, so importing one sets up the VPN in one step.

An OVPN is OpenVPN's options, one a line: the servers to try, the port and protocol, the encryption, the routes, and often the certificates and keys themselves between tags like <ca> and <key>. Options like up can run a command on the computer as it connects.

Filepeek lists the servers, what traffic goes through the VPN and the encryption, and shows any command it runs as text, with a heads-up, since nothing in it should run unseen. Certificates show who signed the server's, and private keys never show.

Questions

How do I use an .ovpn file?

Import it into OpenVPN Connect on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android, or into Tunnelblick on a Mac. To see where it connects first, drop it on this page.

Why does OpenVPN say a certificate is missing?

Some profiles name their certificates and keys as files beside them, like ca.crt and client.key, rather than holding them inline. Keep those files in the same folder when you import it.

Can an .ovpn file run commands?

Yes. Options like up and down run a program when the VPN connects or disconnects, when script-security allows it. Filepeek shows them as text with a heads-up, and never runs them.

Is it safe to share my .ovpn file?

Not when it holds a private key, which lets anyone connect as you. Filepeek says when a key is inside, without showing it.
