About PSF

The Linux console draws its text with PC Screen Fonts, loaded by setfont from a folder like /usr/share/consolefonts. Version 1 holds 256 or 512 glyphs 8 pixels wide, and version 2 any number of any size.

A PSF is a short header and the glyphs' pixels, one size of one width, often followed by a table of the characters each glyph draws, so one glyph can stand for several, like a Latin A and a Cyrillic А.

Filepeek reads the font in your browser, unzipping a .psf.gz first, and shows every glyph on its pixel grid with the characters it draws. Type in it as a console shows it, and save it as TTF, OTB, BDF, PSF 2 or a PNG sheet.

Questions

How do I open a PSF file?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek a PSF. A .psf.gz opens the same way, and every glyph shows on its pixels with the characters it draws.

Can I use a console font in a terminal app?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as TTF or Save as OTB, and install it. It stays sharp at its own size and whole multiples of it.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The font opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
