About Snap
A snap is a SquashFS image: meta/snap.yaml names the app, its version, the base it runs on and its confinement, and lists its apps, the services it starts and the interfaces it connects to, such as the network, your home folder or the camera.
Strict snaps run in a sandbox and only reach what their interfaces allow. Classic snaps run like any program, with your rights, and devmode ones only warn. The store's signature travels apart, in a .assert file beside the snap, so the file itself carries none.
Filepeek reads snap.yaml and lists each interface in plain words, the apps and services with what they run, and its hooks. It flags classic and devmode confinement and services that start with the system, and works out the SHA-256, which the store's assertion names.

Questions
How do I see what a snap can reach without installing it?
Drop it on this page or choose Peek a snap. A page shows its confinement, each interface it connects to in plain words and the services it starts, and its files are listed like a folder.
Can I check a snap's signature?
Not from the snap alone: the Snap Store signs it in a .assert file it sends beside it. Filepeek works out the snap's SHA-256, which is how that assertion names it.
How do I look up a snap on VirusTotal?
Filepeek works out its SHA-256 inside your browser. Look up on VirusTotal opens VirusTotal's page for that hash, and only the hash goes, never the file. Compare checks it against a SHA-256, SHA-1 or MD5 you paste.
Does opening a snap install it?
No. Filepeek only reads it: nothing in it runs, nothing is installed and it never leaves your device.
Can I get files out of a snap?
Yes. Pick any file on the left to open it. snap.yaml opens as text. Export saves them all as a ZIP, or, in Chrome and Edge on a computer, extracts them into a folder.
