Open VHDX files in your browser
The disk of Hyper-V, WSL and Docker Desktop, and of Windows' own backups. Open one right here, see its partitions and open the files you need. Nothing leaves your device.
Or drop it anywhere on this page
What you'll see
Your disk opens like a folder, each volume's files listed on the left, with a map of its partitions and what the disk holds beside them.
- A map of the disk • Every partition to scale
- Every volume as a folder • Files open at once
- Verify • SHA-256, SHA-1 or MD5
- Export • Save as ZIP or Extract all
About VHDX
Microsoft made VHDX for Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8, to follow VHD: disks of up to 64 TB, 4 KB sectors and a log that keeps the disk whole when the power goes. WSL keeps each Linux in an ext4.vhdx, Docker Desktop its images in docker_data.vhdx, and Windows' System Image Backup a VHDX for each disk.
Inside is a whole disk: a GPT or MBR table, then NTFS for Windows, ext4 for Linux, or FAT and exFAT. WSL's disks hold ext4 alone, with no table. Hyper-V's checkpoints are .avhdx files, which keep only the changes made since their parent disk.
Filepeek reads it with 7-Zip compiled to WebAssembly and draws the disk as a map, each partition to scale with its file system, size and space used, its volumes as folders. NTFS shows Windows' system files and hidden files when you choose Show hidden files, and files Windows compressed with CompactOS open as they are. A partition locked with BitLocker shows as locked.

Questions
How do I open a VHDX without Hyper-V?
Drop it on this page or choose Peek a VHDX. The disk shows as a map of its partitions, each volume as a folder, and the file you pick opens right away.
Can I open WSL's ext4.vhdx?
Yes. Your Linux files open as a folder, home folders and all, without starting WSL. Close WSL first, or copy the file, since Windows keeps it locked while it runs.
Can I get files out of a Windows backup?
Yes. A System Image Backup keeps each disk as a VHDX in its WindowsImageBackup folder. Open the one you need, find your files and save them as a ZIP or one at a time.
What about .avhdx checkpoints?
A checkpoint only holds the changes since its parent. Pick or drop it with its parent VHDX and Filepeek opens the disk as it was at that checkpoint.
Is my VHDX uploaded?
No. It opens inside your browser and never leaves your device, however big it is.
