About AI
Adobe Illustrator came out in 1987, and AI has been its format ever since. Since Illustrator 9, in 2000, an AI file is a PDF inside, with Illustrator's own data for editing kept beside it, so most AI files can be drawn by a PDF reader.
An AI file can hold many artboards, each a page of its own, layers that can be hidden, and text that stays text. When it's saved without Create PDF Compatible File, only Illustrator can draw it, and other apps only get a small preview.
Filepeek draws the artwork with pdf.js in a sealed frame, names each artboard as Illustrator does, lists the layers to hide and show, and puts a white, black or checkerboard background behind it. Search the text, and save artboards as PNG or JPEG. A file saved without its PDF shows its preview, with a note.

Questions
How do I open an AI file without Illustrator?
Drop it on this page or choose Peek an AI. It opens at once, its artboards one after another with their names, and nothing to install.
Can I hide layers?
Yes. Choose Layers to see the file's layers, and click an eye to hide or show one. The artboards are drawn again as you go.
Why do I only see a small picture?
The file was saved without Create PDF Compatible File, so it only keeps Illustrator's own data, which nothing but Illustrator draws. Filepeek shows the preview it keeps, with a note.
Can I save an artboard as PNG?
Yes. Choose Export, then Save as PNG or Save as JPEG, tick the artboards you want and pick a size, up to 300 DPI.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
