About PSD

Photoshop has saved its documents as PSD since its first version in 1990. A PSD keeps everything needed to go on editing: each layer with its pixels, blend mode and opacity, masks, text that stays text, smart objects, adjustment layers, groups and the color profile. It also keeps a flattened copy of the whole picture, so other apps can show it.

Adobe publishes the format, but it has grown with every Photoshop, and few apps besides Photoshop read all of it. A PSD can't be wider or taller than 30,000 pixels, or bigger than 2 GB. Larger work goes in a PSB.

Filepeek shows the picture Photoshop saved, exactly as Photoshop shows it, and lists the layers beside it. Hide a layer or show it alone, and Filepeek blends the rest itself with Photoshop's blend modes. Save the picture, any layer or every layer as PNG, copy the words of a text layer, and open the file inside a smart object.

Questions

How do I open a PSD file without Photoshop?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek a PSD. It opens at once as Photoshop saved it, with its layers listed beside it, and nothing to install.

Can I see each layer on its own?

Yes. Every layer and group is listed beside the picture. Click a layer's eye to hide it, or pick it and choose Show alone. Its card tells its blend mode, opacity and size.

Can I save a layer as PNG?

Yes. Pick a layer, then choose Export and Save this layer. Save every layer puts each one in a ZIP as its own PNG, and Save as PNG or JPEG saves the whole picture.

Why does the picture change when I hide a layer?

Filepeek blends the layers again by itself when one is hidden or shown alone. Layer effects, such as shadows, strokes and glows, are left out of that blend, so the picture can change more than that one layer. With every layer on, you see the picture as Photoshop saved it.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
