About XCF

XCF, named after the eXperimental Computing Facility at Berkeley where GIMP began, is how GIMP saves work in progress: every layer with its place, opacity and mode, layer groups, masks, channels, paths and text layers, as tiles that can be compressed.

Unlike Photoshop, GIMP keeps no flattened copy of the image in the file, so another app has to mix the layers itself to show it. Since GIMP 2.10, layers can be 16 or 32 bit and are mixed in linear light.

Filepeek mixes the layers the way GIMP does, with GIMP's own blend modes, so most pictures match GIMP's own export. Hide a layer or show it alone, and save the picture, a layer or every layer as PNG.

Questions

How do I open an XCF file without GIMP?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek an XCF. Its layers are mixed in your browser and shown at once, with nothing to install.

Can I save it as PNG or JPEG?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as PNG or Save as JPEG. Save this layer and Save every layer save layers as PNG.

Why doesn't it look exactly like in GIMP?

A few of GIMP 2.10's blend modes, such as the LCH ones, are mixed a little differently, and so are layers whose values go past white. Most pictures match GIMP's export.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
