About APK

An APK is a ZIP that Android installs: AndroidManifest.xml says what the app is and what it asks for, classes.dex holds its code, resources.arsc and res/ its strings and pictures, and lib/ its native code for each processor. The manifest is binary XML, which only Android reads as it is.

Every APK is signed by its developer's own key. The first scheme signed each file inside, like a Java JAR. Since Android 7.0, schemes v2 and v3 sign the whole file in a block before its central directory, and v3 lets an app move to a new key while updates still install. Android only updates an app with one signed by the same key.

Filepeek turns the manifest into readable XML and lists every permission in plain words, the ones it asks you for apart from those it gets on install. It checks each signature scheme, names the SDKs inside by their code, such as ads and analytics, and works out the SHA-256 to look up on VirusTotal.

Questions

How do I open an APK on a computer?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek an APK. Its files are listed like a folder, with a page beside them on what the app is, who signed it and what it asks for. Nothing installs.

Can I check an APK's signature?

Yes. Filepeek checks every scheme the APK carries, v1 to v3.1, against its files, and shows the certificate it was signed with and its SHA-256, which is how stores and Android tell one developer's apps from another's.

How do I look up an APK on VirusTotal?

Filepeek works out its SHA-256 inside your browser. Look up on VirusTotal opens VirusTotal's page for that hash, and only the hash goes, never the file. Compare checks it against a SHA-256, SHA-1 or MD5 you paste.

Does opening an APK install it?

No. Filepeek only reads it: nothing in it runs, nothing is installed and it never leaves your device.

Can I get files out of an APK?

Yes. Pick any file on the left to open it. AndroidManifest.xml opens as XML. In Chrome and Edge on a computer, Export extracts them all into a folder.
