About IPA

An IPA is a ZIP with the app in Payload/: its executable, Info.plist with its name, version and the reasons it gives for each permission, its frameworks and extensions, and a privacy manifest saying what data it collects. Its PNGs are saved in a form only Apple's devices read.

Every app is code signed: a hash of each page of its code and each of its files, signed with a certificate Apple issued its developer. Apps from outside the App Store carry a provisioning profile, which says whether it's for development, Ad Hoc testing on the devices it lists, or a company's own phones.

Filepeek checks the code signature and the certificate chain to Apple's roots, reads the provisioning profile and the entitlements, and shows each permission with the reason the app gives. It names the SDKs inside, reads the privacy manifest and turns the PNGs into ones any viewer opens.

Questions

How do I open an IPA on a computer?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek an IPA. Its files are listed like a folder, with a page beside them on the app, who signed it, what it asks for and the devices it's for. Nothing installs.

Can I check an IPA's signature?

Yes. Filepeek checks the code signature and its certificate chain to Apple's roots, and reads the provisioning profile, which says who may install the app and until when.

How do I look up an IPA on VirusTotal?

Filepeek works out its SHA-256 inside your browser. Look up on VirusTotal opens VirusTotal's page for that hash, and only the hash goes, never the file. Compare checks it against a SHA-256, SHA-1 or MD5 you paste.

Does opening an IPA install it?

No. Filepeek only reads it: nothing in it runs, nothing is installed and it never leaves your device.

Can I get files out of an IPA?

Yes. Pick any file on the left to open it. Its plists open as text and its PNGs as pictures. In Chrome and Edge on a computer, Export extracts them all into a folder.
