About CHM

Microsoft brought Compiled HTML Help with Windows 98, and for years programs shipped their manuals as .chm files. Manuals, programming books and documentation still come as CHM, which only Windows opens.

A CHM file packs a small website: HTML pages, pictures and styles, a contents file and an index, all compressed into one file.

Filepeek shows the contents beside the pages, and each page with its own pictures and styles. Links between pages stay inside the file, web links open after they ask, and the page's scripts never run.

Questions

How do I open a CHM file on a Mac?

Drop it on this page or press Peek a CHM. Its contents and pages open in your browser, with nothing to install.

Why does Windows show a blank page for my CHM?

Windows blocks help files that came from the internet until you unblock them in their properties. Filepeek opens them as they are.

Do the help file's scripts run?

No. Pages show with their own pictures and styles in a frame where scripts can't run, and nothing loads from the web.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
