About DTA

StataCorp released Stata in 1985, and its datasets have been .dta files ever since: each row an observation and each column a variable. Economists, epidemiologists and many public surveys publish their data this way.

A .dta keeps a label for each variable, value labels like 1 for Male, display formats like %td for dates, and Stata's own missing values, from . to .z. Stata 13 and later write a newer layout that holds longer text.

Filepeek reads it with ReadStat, compiled to WebAssembly. Dates and times show as dates and times, each column's label shows under its name, and Labels and Codes switch between the value labels and their numbers.

Questions

How do I open a DTA file without Stata?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek a DTA. Its observations open as a table with their value labels, with nothing to install.

Do dates show as dates?

Yes. Variables with a date or time format, like %td or %tc, show as dates and times, and monthly or quarterly ones as 2026m3 or 2026q1.

What do the dots mean?

They're Stata's missing values: a dot for a plain missing value, and .a to .z for missing values with a reason, like a refused answer.

Can I turn a DTA file into CSV or Excel?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as CSV, Excel, JSON, JSON Lines or Parquet, with every row or only the rows you sorted and filtered.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The table opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
