About FEATHER
Wes McKinney, who made pandas, and Hadley Wickham, of R's tidyverse, made Feather in 2016 so Python and R could hand data frames to each other quickly. pandas writes it with to_feather, and R with the arrow package.
Since 2020, Feather 2 is an Apache Arrow IPC file: a schema and record batches of columns, which can be compressed with LZ4 or Zstandard. It's built for speed, so it's often bigger than a Parquet file of the same table.
Filepeek reads Feather 2 with Flechette, a record batch at a time as you scroll, and lists the schema and the metadata in its details. The first Feather, from before 2020, doesn't open.

Questions
How do I open a Feather file without Python or R?
Drop it on this page or choose Peek a FEATHER. Its rows open as a table, each column with its type, with nothing to install.
Why doesn't my Feather file open?
It's likely from before 2020, in the first version of the format, which Filepeek doesn't read. Reading it in pandas and saving it again with to_feather writes Feather 2.
How is Feather different from Parquet?
Feather keeps a table close to how it sits in memory, so it reads and writes fast. Parquet packs it tighter, so its files are smaller. Filepeek opens both.
Can I save it as CSV or Excel?
Yes. Choose Export, then Save as CSV, Excel, JSON, JSON Lines or Parquet, with every row or only the rows you sorted and filtered.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file is read inside your browser and never leaves your device.
