About GED

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made GEDCOM in 1984 so family historians could share their research between programs. Most apps still write version 5.5 or 5.5.1, and FamilySearch published 7.0 in 2021, with GEDZip (.gdz) for a tree zipped with its pictures.

A GED is lines of text, each with a level, a tag and a value: INDI records for people with their names, births, deaths and other events, FAM records joining partners and their children, and SOUR records for the sources behind them. Older files are often in ANSEL, a character set for accented letters that few programs still read right.

Filepeek reads it in your browser, ANSEL, UTF-8 and UTF-16 alike, and lists every person to filter and sort by name, birth, death or birthplace. A person's card shows their life's events by date, their parents and siblings, each family with its children, four generations of ancestors and three of descendants, and their notes and sources. Tree shows every record as the file has it, and Export saves the people as CSV.

Questions

Why are the accents in names wrong?

Older GED files are often written in ANSEL, a character set made for library catalogs, which most apps read as Windows' own and turn é and ü into odd characters. Filepeek reads ANSEL, so names show as they were typed.

Where are the photos?

A GED only names its pictures' files, so a tree exported from Ancestry or MyHeritage comes without them. A GEDZip (.gdz) carries them zipped with the tree, which opens here, its people as in a GED.

Can I turn a family tree into a spreadsheet?

Yes. Choose Export to save every person as CSV, with their name, sex, birth and death dates and places, and their father and mother.
