Open GZ files in your browser
The compression of Unix, Linux and the web, usually wrapped around a TAR. Open a .gz or .tar.gz right here and see what's inside. Nothing leaves your device.
Or drop it anywhere on this page
What you'll see
Your archive opens like a folder, its files listed on the left.
- Listed like a folder • Unpacks only what you pick
- Locked archives • Hidden file names included
- Search • Find any file by its name
- Export • Save as ZIP or Extract all
About GZ
Jean-loup Gailly and Mark Adler released gzip in 1992 to replace Unix compress, whose LZW method was patented. It compresses one file with Deflate, the same method most ZIP files use.
To pack many files, gzip compresses a TAR, which gives the .tar.gz and .tgz files of source code, backups and Linux downloads. Servers also keep their old logs as .gz files, like access.log.2.gz.
Filepeek lists the files of a .tar.gz as one archive, with no second step. A .gz that holds anything but a TAR opens its file at once, so a compressed log shows up with line numbers and search.

Questions
How do I open a .tar.gz file?
Drop it on this page or choose Peek a GZ. The files of the TAR inside are listed like a folder, and the one you pick opens right away, with no command line.
What's inside a .gz file?
One compressed file. In a .tar.gz or .tgz, that file is a TAR holding many more, and Filepeek lists those directly.
Is .tgz the same as .tar.gz?
Yes. The .tgz name is just a shorter way to write .tar.gz, a TAR compressed with gzip.
Can I read a compressed log?
Yes. A file like error.log.gz opens straight in the text viewer, with line numbers and search.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's unpacked inside your browser and never leaves your device.
