About ZIP

Phil Katz of PKWARE made ZIP in 1989 for his PKZIP program and published the format for anyone to use. A ZIP packs many files and folders into one, each file compressed on its own, usually with Deflate. Zip64, added in 2001, lifts the old limits of 4 GB and 65,535 files.

A ZIP can be locked with a password, with the old ZipCrypto or with AES. The password locks the contents, but the names of the files stay readable. WinZip saves ZIPs that use newer compression methods as .zipx files.

Filepeek lists a ZIP's files like a folder and unpacks only the one you pick, which opens right there if it's a photo, a video or a text. Only the ZIP's index is read to list it, so even a ZIP of several gigabytes opens at once.

Questions

How do I open a ZIP file?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek a ZIP. Its files are listed like a folder, and the one you pick opens right away, with nothing to install.

Can I open one file without unzipping everything?

Yes. Filepeek only unpacks the file you pick, so even a big ZIP opens at once. The arrow keys step through its files.

How do I open a ZIP with a password?

Type the password when Filepeek asks. ZipCrypto and AES both work. The password is only kept in memory for that ZIP and never stored.

How do I extract all the files?

Choose Export, then Extract all, and pick a folder. Filepeek writes every file into a new folder inside it. This works in Chrome and Edge on computers.

Is my ZIP uploaded?

No. The ZIP opens inside your browser and never leaves your device. Nothing in it runs.
