About XZ
Lasse Collin and Igor Pavlov designed XZ, whose first official version came out in 2009 to replace the older .lzma format. It compresses with LZMA2, the same method 7-Zip uses.
XZ makes files smaller than gzip or bzip2 and unpacks them faster than bzip2. The Linux kernel and many other projects ship their source code as .tar.xz, and each .xz carries a check, CRC64 by default, to catch damage.
No browser opens XZ by itself. Filepeek unpacks it with 7-Zip compiled to WebAssembly: a .tar.xz or .txz opens straight to the files of the TAR, and a lone .xz holding one file opens it right away.

How do I open a .tar.xz file?

What's inside a .xz file?

What's the difference between XZ and 7z?
