About LZMA

Igor Pavlov designed the .lzma format for the LZMA SDK, the compression library behind 7-Zip. It's also called LZMA_Alone, since it holds a bare LZMA stream with no archive around it.

A .lzma file is a 13 byte header followed by the compressed data, with no checksum. LZMA Utils brought it to Linux, often around a TAR as .tar.lzma, until the XZ format replaced it.

No browser opens LZMA by itself. Filepeek unpacks it with 7-Zip compiled to WebAssembly: a .tar.lzma opens straight to the files of the TAR, and a lone .lzma holding one file opens it right away.

Questions

How do I open a .lzma file?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek an LZMA. A .tar.lzma lists its files like a folder, and a lone .lzma opens the file inside right away, with no command line.

What's the difference between LZMA and XZ?

XZ is the newer format, made to replace .lzma. It compresses with LZMA2 and adds a proper header and checks against damage, while .lzma is a bare stream.

Is it the same as a 7z?

No. A 7z is a full archive, with a list of files and passwords. A .lzma holds one stream of data, often a TAR.

Can I turn it into a ZIP?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as ZIP. Phones and computers open the ZIP without an app.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It's unpacked inside your browser and never leaves your device.
