About MIDI
MIDI arrived in 1983 so that synthesizers from different makers could play together, and the Standard MIDI File followed in 1988. Games, web pages, ringtones and karaoke machines used MIDI files for years, and musicians still trade them.
A MIDI file holds notes, not sound: which instrument plays, when and how hard. The sound comes from whatever synthesizer plays it, so the same file sounds different everywhere. KAR files add karaoke lyrics, and RMI files can carry their own instrument sounds.
No browser plays MIDI by itself. Filepeek plays it with SpessaSynth and the GeneralUser GS sound set by S. Christian Collins, with 259 instruments and 11 drum kits, or with the sounds an RMI carries.

Questions
How do I play a MIDI file?
Drop it on this page or press Peek a MIDI. It plays right in your browser with a full set of instruments, and Show tags lists its track names, copyright and any karaoke lyrics.
Can I slow a song down to practice?
Yes. Pick half or 1.5× speed, or double. The synthesizer changes the tempo, so every note keeps its pitch.
Can I turn a MIDI into an MP3?
Yes. Choose Export, then Save as MP3 or WAV, and the song is saved as it sounds here. Drag the handles on the waveform strip to keep only a part.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The MIDI plays inside your browser and never leaves your device.
