About MP3

Fraunhofer IIS in Germany led the work on MP3, which became part of the MPEG-1 standard in 1993. It shrank songs to about a tenth of their size, which paved the way for Winamp, Napster and the iPod, and its last patents ran out in 2017.

An MP3 leaves out what the ear barely hears. Most run at 128 to 320 kbps, at a constant or a variable bitrate, and ID3 tags carry the title, artist, album and cover art.

Every browser plays MP3 by itself. Filepeek adds the whole waveform, the details and the tags, speeds that keep the pitch, and Export, which cuts out a part with nothing re-encoded or saves the whole as a WAV.

Questions

How do I cut an MP3 without losing quality?

Open it and choose Export. Drag the handles on the waveform strip to where the part starts and ends, then pick Original. The part is saved as an MP3 with nothing re-encoded.

Can I see the bitrate and the tags?

Yes. The bitrate, sample rate and channels sit along the top, and Show tags opens the title, artist, album, track, year, genre, comment and cover.

Which keys can I use?

Space plays and pauses, and comma and period jump back and ahead 10 seconds. In a folder of songs, the arrow keys step through them, and the next one plays when one ends.

Is my music uploaded?

No. The MP3 plays inside your browser, and Export works there too. Nothing is sent to a server.
