About M4A
M4A is an MP4 with sound alone. Apple made it common with iTunes in 2003, and songs from the iTunes Store, iPhone voice memos and many Android recorders are M4A files. Audiobooks use .m4b, the same format with chapters.
Most M4A files hold AAC. Others hold Apple Lossless, or ALAC, which Apple introduced in 2004 and opened to everyone in 2011. It keeps the exact sound of a CD, and it has no extension of its own.
Every browser plays AAC in an M4A by itself, but only Safari plays Apple Lossless. Filepeek decodes it with FFmpeg in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and shows the tags and cover. Songs locked with FairPlay, as .m4p files, stay locked.

Questions
Why won't an Apple Lossless file play?
Chrome, Edge and Firefox can't decode Apple Lossless, or ALAC, which hides in M4A files. Filepeek decodes it with FFmpeg inside your browser, so it plays here with nothing to install.
How do I turn an M4A into an MP3?
Open it, choose Export, then Save as MP3. The title, artist, album and cover go into the MP3 too.
Does it play audiobooks?
Yes. M4B audiobooks play like any M4A, at up to double speed with the pitch kept, and comma and period jump back and ahead 10 seconds. Audible's .aax books are locked and don't play.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The M4A plays inside your browser and never leaves your device.
