About OGG

Ogg is the open, royalty free container of the Xiph.Org Foundation, and Vorbis, the sound codec made for it, reached version 1.0 in 2002. Games, Linux apps and Wikipedia use it, and Telegram saves voice messages as OGG.

Most .ogg files hold Vorbis. Newer ones often hold Opus, and some hold FLAC or Speex. The .oga extension marks an Ogg file with sound alone, and Vorbis comments carry the tags.

Chrome, Edge and Firefox play OGG by themselves, and so does Safari from version 18.4. Filepeek decodes it with FFmpeg on older Macs and iPhones, along with the Speex no browser plays, and Export saves an MP3 that plays anywhere.

Questions

Why won't OGG files play on my iPhone?

Safari plays OGG only from iOS 18.4 and macOS 15.4 on, and many apps don't take it at all. Filepeek decodes it inside your browser, and Export saves an MP3 that plays everywhere.

What's the difference between OGG and Opus files?

Both use the Ogg container. A .ogg usually holds Vorbis, while a .opus file holds Opus, the newer codec of voice messages and calls. Filepeek plays both.

Can I convert OGG to MP3?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as MP3. Drag the handles on the waveform strip first to save only a part.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The OGG plays inside your browser and never leaves your device.
