About SPX

Jean-Marc Valin created Speex at the Xiph.Org Foundation, and version 1.0 came out in 2003. Voice recorders, VoIP apps, games and Flash Player used it to send and store speech for free.

Speex records speech at 8, 16 or 32 kHz, at about 2 to 44 kbps, and .spx files hold it in an Ogg container. Xiph.Org has since replaced it with Opus, which sounds better at the same size.

No browser plays Speex by itself. Filepeek decodes it with FFmpeg inside your browser, and Export saves an MP3 or WAV that any app opens.

Questions

How do I play an SPX file?

Drop it on this page or press Peek an SPX. It plays right in your browser, with nothing to install.

Is Speex the same as Opus?

No. Opus is its successor, from the same people, and sounds better at the same bitrate. Filepeek plays both.

Can I convert it to MP3?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as MP3. Small, at 128 kbps, is plenty for speech, and the handles on the waveform strip save only a part.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. The recording plays inside your browser and never leaves your device.
