About Opus
The IETF made Opus a standard in 2012, built from Xiph.Org's CELT and Skype's SILK. It sounds good from tiny voice bitrates up to music, which is why WhatsApp voice messages, Discord and YouTube all use it.
An .opus file holds Opus in an Ogg container, like some .ogg files. Opus runs from 6 to 510 kbps, so a minute of speech can take under 200 KB.
Chrome, Edge and Firefox play Opus by themselves, and so does Safari from version 18.4. Filepeek decodes it with FFmpeg on older Macs and iPhones, and Export saves an MP3 for apps that don't take .opus files.

Questions
How do I play a WhatsApp voice message?
Drop the .opus file on this page or press Peek an Opus. It plays right in your browser, on a computer or a phone, with nothing to install.
Can I turn it into an MP3?
Yes. Choose Export, then Save as MP3. Small, at 128 kbps, is plenty for speech, and the handles on the waveform strip save only a part.
Can I listen faster?
Yes. Pick 1.5× or double speed, and voices keep their pitch. Comma and period jump back and ahead 10 seconds.
Is my voice message uploaded?
No. It plays inside your browser and never leaves your device.
