About MKA

MKA is the sound-only version of Matroska, the open container that started in 2002. Soundtracks taken from movies, concert recordings and whole albums with chapters often come as MKA files.

An MKA can hold almost any sound codec: FLAC, Opus, Vorbis, AAC, MP3, PCM, or the Dolby Digital, TrueHD and DTS tracks of films. It can also carry several tracks, tags and cover art.

Chrome plays many MKA files by itself, and Firefox since version 145 unless the sound is FLAC, MP3 or PCM. Filepeek plays the rest in every browser, and decodes Dolby Digital, TrueHD and DTS on its own.

Questions

What's the difference between MKA and MKV?

Both are Matroska. An MKV holds video, while an MKA holds sound alone. Filepeek plays both.

Does it play TrueHD and DTS tracks?

Yes. Filepeek decodes Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital and DTS inside your browser, which most browsers can't do on their own.

Can I convert MKA to MP3?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as MP3, or Save as WAV for editing. Drag the handles on the waveform strip to save only a part.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The MKA plays inside your browser and never leaves your device.
