About MOD

Standard definition camcorders from JVC's Everio line, Panasonic and Canon recorded to hard drives and SD cards as .mod files, in folders like SD_VIDEO\PRG001, with a .moi file beside each one that keeps its date and the shape of its picture.

A MOD is an MPEG-2 program stream, like a DVD's VOB: MPEG-2 video at 720 × 480 or 720 × 576 with Dolby Digital or MPEG sound. Renamed to .mpg, it plays in many players.

Chrome, Edge and Firefox can't play MOD. Filepeek decodes it with FFmpeg inside your browser, sound included, and Export saves an MP4 that's much smaller and plays everywhere.

Questions

How do I play MOD files from my camcorder?

Copy them from the SD_VIDEO folder of the camera's drive or card, then drop them on this page or press Peek a MOD. They play right in your browser.

What's the .moi file next to it?

It keeps the clip's date and time, how long it runs and whether it's 4:3 or 16:9. The video is all in the MOD, which plays without it.

Can I convert MOD to MP4?

Yes. Open a clip, choose Export, then Save as MP4 or MOV. MPEG-2 takes about twice the room of H.264, so the MP4 is often much smaller.

Is a MOD file a music module?

Amiga music modules end in .mod too, but they're songs, not video. Camcorder MOD files open here.
