About MXF

SMPTE published MXF in 2004 so broadcast cameras, editing systems and archives could swap video along with its timecode and metadata. Sony XDCAM, Panasonic P2 and Avid all use it.

An MXF can hold many codecs: MPEG-2 for XDCAM, DV and DVCPRO for P2, and H.264 or DNxHD in newer cameras and editors, often with several tracks of PCM sound.

Chrome, Edge and Firefox can't play MXF. Filepeek reads it and decodes MPEG-2 and DV with FFmpeg inside your browser, while H.264 plays where the browser can decode it.

Questions

How do I open an MXF without an editing app?

Drop the clip on this page or press Peek an MXF. Filepeek plays it in your browser, so you can check a shot on any computer.

Which MXF files play?

MPEG-2 clips, as from XDCAM, and DV or DVCPRO clips, as from P2, play in every browser. H.264 clips play where the browser can decode them.

Can I make an MP4 to review or share?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as MP4. Small or a size limit gives a light copy that's easy to send.

Is my clip uploaded?

No. The clip plays inside your browser, so client footage never leaves your device.
