About SGI

Paul Haeberli made the SGI image format at Silicon Graphics for its IRIS workstations, where studios and labs made their pictures for years. Maya, Nuke and Blender still read it, as .sgi, .rgb or .bw.

An SGI file is a 512 byte header, then each channel as a plane of its own: gray, gray with alpha, RGB or RGBA, in 8 or 16 bits, as they are or packed with run lengths, its rows from the bottom up.

No browser shows SGI. Filepeek decodes it itself, with its transparency, and Export saves it as PNG or JPEG.
