About SPZ

Gaussian splatting, from 2023, captures a place or a thing from photos or a video as millions of soft colored blobs that look real from any angle. Niantic made SPZ in 2024 to share them, about ten times smaller than the PLY a capture starts as, and opened it, so Scaniverse and other apps save it.

An SPZ is gzipped binary: how many splats, then each splat's position, size, turn, opacity and color, packed in a few bytes each, with spherical harmonics for colors that change with the angle.

Filepeek reads it in your browser and draws it with Spark, an open renderer of splats, turned the right way up and fitted to the middle of the capture. Turn it, zoom and move through it, put a dark, light or no background behind it, and save the view as PNG.

Questions

How do I open an SPZ file?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek an SPZ. The capture opens at once in 3D, with nothing to install.

Why is it upside down?

Most captures are saved the way the cameras that made them see, with up pointing down, so Filepeek turns them over. When one comes out the wrong way, choose Turn it over.

What are Gaussian splats?

A way to capture a real place or thing from photos or a video, from 2023. Instead of triangles, it keeps millions of soft blobs of color, each with its own size, turn and opacity, which together look like a photo from any angle.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The capture opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
