About SquashFS

Phillip Lougher released SquashFS in 2002, and it joined Linux itself in 2009. It packs a whole read-only file system into one compressed file, which Linux mounts as it is: Ubuntu's live system is casper/filesystem.squashfs, Fedora's LiveOS/squashfs.img.

Files and folders are compressed in blocks of up to 1 MB, with gzip, LZMA, LZO, XZ or zstd, and keep their owners, permissions and links. Routers' firmware, Snap packages and AppImages carry their files the same way.

Filepeek reads it with 7-Zip compiled to WebAssembly and lists it like a folder, with dotfiles behind Show hidden files. A live disc's SquashFS opens in place from inside its ISO, and any file opens on its own.

Questions

How do I open a SquashFS file?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek a SquashFS. Its files are listed like a folder, and the one you pick opens right away, with nothing to install or mount.

Can I look inside a Linux live ISO's system?

Yes. Open the ISO, then its filesystem.squashfs or squashfs.img, and the whole system opens as a folder from inside it.

Can I save files out of it?

Yes. Open any file to see it, or choose Export to save a folder or the whole image as a ZIP.

Which compressions open?

gzip, LZMA, LZO, XZ and zstd, the ones nearly every image uses.

Is my image uploaded?

No. It opens inside your browser and never leaves your device, however big it is.
