About VTT

The W3C made WebVTT, Web Video Text Tracks, the subtitle format of HTML video around 2010. Video sites, streaming services and recorders of online meetings save captions as .vtt.

A VTT is plain text like an SRT, starting with WEBVTT: each cue with its times, an optional name, and its text, with tags for italics, bold and who is speaking.

Dropped with a video, a VTT named like it shows on the picture, with the Subtitles button to switch or hide them. Alone, it opens as a table of every line with its start, end and length, to sort, search and save as CSV.

Questions

How do I show subtitles on a video?

Drop the video and its subtitles together, or the folder that holds them. A file named like the video shows on it at once, and the Subtitles button picks another or turns them off.

Can I read a meeting's transcript from its VTT?

Yes. Open it on its own, and each line is a row with its time and who spoke, to search and save as CSV.

What is the difference from SRT?

Little: VTT starts with WEBVTT, writes times with a dot, and can name who speaks. Both show here.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
