About YAML

YAML writes the same objects and lists as JSON for people to read and edit: keys and values on their own lines, lists with dashes, nesting by indents and comments after a #. Clark Evans, Ingy döt Net and Oren Ben-Kiki made it in 2001, and it became the language of configuration: Kubernetes manifests, Docker Compose, GitHub Actions, Ansible and OpenAPI files are YAML.

One file can hold several documents split by ---. Anchors (&name) and aliases (*name) reuse a part instead of repeating it, and tags like !!binary name a value's type. YAML 1.1 read yes, no, on and off as true and false, which turned the country code NO into false, and YAML 1.2 dropped that.

Filepeek reads the file with the yaml library and shows each document as a tree with its comments, anchors and tags. An alias leads to its anchor, values YAML 1.1 reads as true or false are marked, a mistake is named in plain words, and Save as JSON fills in every alias.

Questions

How do I open a YAML file?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek a YAML. It opens at once as a tree, each of its documents unfolded, with nothing to install.

Can I turn YAML into JSON?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as JSON. A file with several documents becomes a list of them, aliases are filled in and merge keys (<<) are merged.

Does it keep my comments?

Yes. Each comment is shown with the key or item it belongs to.

What if my YAML is broken?

It opens up to the mistake, which is marked and named in plain words, like a bad indent or a missing colon.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
