About AC3

Dolby made AC-3, better known as Dolby Digital, in 1991, and it reached cinemas the next year. It became the sound of DVDs, digital TV and Blu-ray, and an .ac3 file holds such a track on its own, as rippers and editing apps save it.

AC-3 carries up to 5.1 channels: left, center, right, two surrounds and a subwoofer. DVDs often use 448 kbps for 5.1 and 192 kbps for stereo, and the format tops out at 640 kbps.

Safari on a Mac plays AC-3 by itself. In Chrome, Edge and Firefox, Filepeek decodes it inside your browser, and Export saves an MP3 or WAV that plays on anything.

Questions

How do I play an AC3 file?

Drop it on this page or press Peek an AC3. Filepeek decodes the Dolby Digital sound inside your browser, with no player or codec pack to install.

Where do AC3 files come from?

Mostly from DVDs, Blu-rays and TV recordings, when a ripper or an editing app saves the sound as a track of its own.

Can I convert AC3 to MP3?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as MP3, or Save as WAV for editing. Drag the handles on the waveform strip to save only a part.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The AC3 is decoded inside your browser and never leaves your device.
