About DBF

Ashton-Tate's dBase was the database of the first PCs, and its .dbf tables outlived it: FoxPro, Clipper and many accounting programs wrote them, and every shapefile on a map keeps its attributes in one.

A DBF starts with a list of its fields, each with a type and a width: text, numbers, dates, logicals and memos, whose long text sits in a .dbt or .fpt file next to it. Text is in the code page of its time, which the header or a .cpg file names, and deleted records stay in the file with a mark.

Filepeek reads dBase and FoxPro files, guesses the code page when nothing names it, and lets you pick another one next to the file's details. Open the .dbf together with its .dbt or .fpt and the memos show too. Deleted records are struck through.

Questions

How do I open a DBF file without dBase or Excel?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek a DBF. Its records open as a table, with nothing to install.

Why do memo fields show Memo and a number?

The memo text is kept in a .dbt or .fpt file with the same name, which didn't come with it. Pick or drop both files together and the memos show.

Why do I see strange characters?

The file was likely written in another code page. Pick the right one next to the file's details, such as DOS Latin 1 or Windows-1251, and the table is read again.

Can I see a shapefile's attributes?

Yes. Open the shapefile's .dbf to see its attribute table, together with its .cpg when it has one, which names the code page.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The table opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
