About DSS

Olympus, Philips and Grundig made the Digital Speech Standard in 1994 for their digital voice recorders. Hospitals, law firms and courts record dictation as DSS, and typists transcribe it.

A DSS file keeps speech squeezed to a few kilobits a second, with a header that names the author, the job number and when it was recorded.

No browser plays DSS by itself, and the players that do are paid. Filepeek decodes it with FFmpeg inside your browser, plays it at half to double speed with the pitch kept, and Export saves an MP3.

Questions

How do I play a DSS file without dictation software?

Drop it on this page or press Peek a DSS. It plays right in your browser, with nothing to install.

Can I slow it down to type along?

Yes. The speed button plays it at half speed, or faster, with the voice kept at its own pitch.

Does DS2 play too?

No. DS2, from newer recorders, is usually encrypted with a key only the dictation software holds.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. The recording opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
