About FIG

Figma came out in 2016 as a design tool in the browser, and became where most apps and websites are designed. Designs live in Figma's cloud, and Save local copy saves one as a .fig file, to back it up, hand it over or keep it after a team or a plan ends.

A .fig file packs the whole document in Figma's own binary format, with the schema to read it, next to its pictures and a thumbnail. Figma doesn't publish the format, and only Figma opens it, once it's uploaded to an account.

Filepeek reads the file itself and draws every page from the shapes and letters Figma saved, sharp at any zoom, with components and their overrides as Figma shows them. Browse pages and layers, search the text, inspect any layer for its size, colors, fonts and CSS, and save frames as PNG or JPEG, a layer as SVG or a page as PDF.

Questions

How do I open a .fig file without Figma?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek a FIG. Figma's thumbnail shows at once, then every page is drawn from the file, with no account and no upload.

Where do .fig files come from?

In Figma, Save local copy in the File menu saves a design as a .fig file. People use it to back up their work, hand a design over or keep it after leaving a team.

Can I get a layer's CSS?

Yes. Choose Inspect and click a layer to see its size, position, colors, fonts and effects, with CSS to copy. Hold Alt, or Option on a Mac, to see the gaps to the layers around it.

Can I export frames as PNG?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as PNG or Save as JPEG, tick the frames you want and pick 1x, 2x or 3x. A picked layer saves as SVG, and the page as a PDF.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
