About Guitar Pro

Arobas Music released Guitar Pro in 1997 to write tablature on a computer and hear it played. Its files became the way guitar and bass players share songs, and tab sites hold thousands: .gp3, .gp4 and .gp5 from the early versions, .gpx from Guitar Pro 6 and .gp since Guitar Pro 7.

A Guitar Pro file is a whole band's score: a track for each instrument with its tuning and sound, every bar's notes with bends, slides, hammer-ons and palm mutes, the tempo, the repeats and the lyrics. Guitar Pro 6 packs it in a container of its own, and Guitar Pro 7 and 8 in a ZIP.

Filepeek reads it with alphaTab in your browser. The song opens on white paper as notation and tab, its first track on show, and plays with General MIDI sounds, the bar it's on followed. Pick a track or all of them, notation, tab or both, a page or one long line, and Save as MIDI or as a Guitar Pro file.

Questions

How do I open a Guitar Pro file without Guitar Pro?

Drop it on this page or press Peek a Guitar Pro. It opens as notation and tab and plays in your browser, with nothing to install.

Which versions open?

Every one from Guitar Pro 3 on: .gp3, .gp4 and .gp5, Guitar Pro 6's .gpx and the .gp files of Guitar Pro 7 and 8. Files from Guitar Pro 1 and 2 don't.

Why does it sound different from Guitar Pro?

Guitar Pro 6 and later play recorded instruments of their own. Filepeek plays each track with the General MIDI sound it names, so the notes and the timing are the same and the tone is simpler.

Can I slow a song down to learn it?

Yes. The speed button plays it at half, three quarters, 1.25 or 1.5 times its speed, and the bar it reaches is followed as it plays.

How do I convert Guitar Pro to MIDI?

Open it, choose Export, then Save as MIDI. Every track goes into the MIDI file with its instrument.
