About MusicXML

Recordare released MusicXML in 2004 so notation apps could share scores, and the W3C's Music Notation Community Group keeps it now. MuseScore, Sibelius and Dorico all read and write it, and so do the apps that scan printed music.

A MusicXML file spells out a score in XML: each part with its instrument, every measure with its notes, rests, chords, dynamics and lyrics, and how the page is laid out. An .mxl is the same score zipped, a fraction of the size.

Filepeek reads it with alphaTab in your browser. The score opens on white paper with every part, and plays with General MIDI sounds, the bar it's on followed. Pick one part or all of them, a page or one long line, and Save as MIDI or as a Guitar Pro file.

Questions

How do I open a MusicXML file?

Drop it on this page or press Peek a MusicXML. The score opens with every part and plays in your browser, with nothing to install.

What's the difference between MXL and MusicXML?

None in the score: an .mxl is a .musicxml zipped with a small index, a fraction of the size. Both open here.

Why does my score look different from the app that made it?

MusicXML carries the notes and much of the layout, but each app spaces bars and breaks lines its own way. The music is the same, and Page or One line lays it out to fit your window.

Can I hear a MusicXML file?

Yes. Press play and each part plays with the instrument it names, the bar it's on followed. The speed button slows it to half or speeds it up to 1.5 times.

How do I convert MusicXML to MIDI?

Open it, choose Export, then Save as MIDI. Every part goes into the MIDI file.

Does a MusicXML saved as .xml open?

Yes. A score named .xml opens as a score when its top element says it is one. Other XML opens in the data viewer.
