Open MAT files in your browser

The file MATLAB saves its workspace in. Open one right here and see every variable, with no MATLAB or Python. Nothing leaves your device.

Or drop it anywhere on this page

What you'll see

Your MAT-file opens as its workspace, every variable with its class and size.

About MAT

MATLAB saves variables into a .mat file, and labs, instruments and courses share data as .mat: signals, images, measurements and models. SciPy, Octave and Julia read and write it too.

Since MATLAB 5 a MAT-file is a 128 byte header, then each variable with its class, its size and its name: numbers of any class, real or complex, text, logicals, sparse matrices, cells and structs, kept column by column. From version 7 each variable is packed with zlib, and version 7.3 keeps them in HDF5.

Filepeek reads versions 5 to 7 in your browser. The Workspace lists every variable with its class and size, the Tree unfolds structs and cells down to their values, and each numeric array opens as a table or saves as a NumPy array. A 7.3 file, and MATLAB's own objects like strings and tables, aren't read, and the card says so.

Questions

How do I open a .mat file without MATLAB?

Drop it on this page or choose Peek a MAT. Every variable shows with its class and size, with nothing to install.

Can I export a matrix to CSV?

Yes. Open the array from Arrays, then choose Export and Save as CSV, Excel, JSON or Parquet. It also saves as a NumPy .npy file.

Does it open MAT-files saved with -v7.3?

No. Version 7.3 keeps its variables in HDF5, which Filepeek doesn't read. Saved with -v7, the same variables open.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It opens inside your browser and never leaves your device.
